Drawing Time is Scarce {when the weather is gorgeous}

kaleidoscope drawing photo progression gridThis week the weather has been absolutely gorgeous. We get a lot of false starts to summer here in Chicago, but I think we’ve finally kicked it into window opening, backyard barbequeing, fresh caprese salad eating, flip flop rocking, neighborhood strolling, doing-anything-in-the-wold-but-sitting-in-front-of-the-computer-summery-wonderfullness. Is wonderfullness even a word? Now it is. Anyway, I apologize for the quiet around here, but other than my continuing job hunt and the new patio set we bought at Target (it is pretty sweet though) there really wasn’t too much to report.

In the midst of all the aforementioned stuff and dealing with a couple of kids as hyped up on the beautiful weather as I am, I did manage to complete a small drawing. It’s nothing spectacularly exciting, but it’s still nice. I kind of regret the color scheme I chose though. I grabbed the first caddy of markers I could find, because my garage is a mess right now and it was one of the only art supply containers I could get to without scaling a five foot stack of boxes and chairs. (If you knew how klutzy and accident prone I am you’d be nodding in agreement that it was probably a good decision). That particular art caddy did not have a very good color selection. Oh well, whatcha gonna do, right? If you follow me on Instagram you probably have already seen most of these photos documenting the progression of my drawing, but if not, check them out below. I kind of wish I’d used the same filter on all of them for better comparison, but alas, I did not.

Speaking of Instagram, I’m becoming a little obsessed with it. I’m trying to show some restraint, and remind myself that the world probably isn’t all that interesting in what I’m eating for lunch every day. Still, I’m having a blast with it, and I love checking out what other artists are up to.

Weekly Update {and some drawing progress}

detail photo of kaleidoscope marker drawing

Yikes…just realized that I haven’t posted anything in a week. Bad, bad, bad! Life has been pretty busy, but in a good way. My daughter was on spring break from school, so there was a lot of running around with the kids, which translates to NOT a lot of time to spend in front of the computer.

Tattoo update! I got some more work done last Monday and now it’s about 80-85% done. Unless we come up with some more cool stuff to add, which is always possible. We have to finish coloring some of the background and finish the sky area (all over my shoulder which was kind of painful and I’m not really looking forward to) then it’s done! You can see it in the picture below. Also…do you know how tricky it is to take a picture of your own arm with a cell phone? Of the approximately twenty I took, this is the only one I’m ever moderately happy with.

my almost finished tattoo

Not the best photos ever...but YOU try taking a good picture of your own arm!

We’re going to make great old people someday. Me and the BF spent the other night smoking cigars, drinking dirty martinis, and playing Bacci ball with some friends (which apparently I’m pretty good at). And you know what? It was awesome.

Newly obsessed with…Game of Thrones. Anyone else loving this show? I needed something to fill the void of The Walking Dead and American Horror Story. It’s very unusual for me to get SUPER excited about a show, but this one’s got me hooked. My BF made me watch the last episode of season 1 and the first episode of season 2 a few weeks ago and I loved it, which meant I had to start watching the entire first season on OnDemand to get a grasp on who all the characters were in relation to each other. And I felt like I was cheating because I already knew how the season ended. Anyway…yeah. Game of Thrones. Also, we decided that you could make a drinking game out of it. Every time someone gets beheaded…take a drink.

Instagram for Android is finally here, which I downloaded the day it came out (along with a billion other people). I’m the first to admit that I had quite intense Instagram envy of all you iphone users, and Android phone didn’t have anything even remotely as cool. If you want to follow me, my user name is megandowntherabbithole.

New site coming soon! Yup…I started working on a site redesign for megandowntherabbithole. I’m hoping to have it up by the end of this month if all goes well.

Amidst all this other madness, I did manage to squeeze in some more coloring on my drawing. It’s getting there! I actually had to make a trip to the art supply store to pick up some markers for the background work, but now that I’ve done that, I think it’s in the home stretch!

How are things in your world?

Still working on… {teal & yellow kaleidoscope marker drawing progression}

image

I’ve been working on this project for a little over a week now. I wish I’d taken a photo before I started coloring everything in, but honestly I got sucked into working (in “the zone”, if you will) and straight up forgot. Oops.

I’m loving this color combination of teal and brown, which was inspired by a tattoo I watched my BF give the other day. The bright yellow is just there to give it a little punch, and the browns and tans calm everything back down. Looking at it I feel like it could use a third bright color, but I’m not sure what yet. I’ll have to get some scrap paper and start playing with color combinations until something agrees with me. The thought of putting in this much work and then royally screwing it up by picking the wrong color is always a little unnerving. ;)

geometric kaleidoscope like shape in autumn colorsFirst of all, I need to confess my stupidity. I spent the whole day without internet yesterday. The wireless icon on my computer was showing a full signal, but I couldn’t get a single website to come up. I tried restarting my computer…no luck. I checked my modem…no lights at all. I tried pressing the power button, unplugging and replugging the cables…nada. I figured the modem went bad (because it’s happened to me TWICE before) and resolved the call Comcast later in the day when I was done running errands. After dinner last night, on a whim, I decided to check and make sure it was actually plugged into the wall. And you know what? It wasn’t.

Dumb, da-dum-dum, DUMMMMMMMMB……

kaleidoscope like shape in autumn colors with protractor, ruler and compassIt’s been an unusually calm morning around here. Kids are content, chasing each other around and getting Fruity Pebbles all over the floor. Oh, and there are DVDs and socks all over my house. My little one is fascinated with both of those things right now. Or rather, fascinated with pulling them off the shelves/out of the laundry basket and then disseminating them across the house. And you know what? I’ve given up. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’d rather have a messy house all day and do ONE massive cleanup at the end of the night, rather than constantly follow her around cleaning up after her. That kid can destroy a house MUCH faster than I can clean it up. I’m sure some of you out there can relate. Anyway, I’ve been lucky enough to get little pockets of time over the last few days to get this drawing finished.

I could say that I chose oranges, yellows and browns because I had Thanksgiving on the brain, and I did start working on right after, so that’s not entirely a lie. But the more truthful statement is that I’ve been very conscious lately about using colors I don’t really care for. Yellow, brown and orange? Yeah, probably my least favorite three of the entire spectrum. I’m definitely prefer cool colors and jewel tones. But using nothing but blues, green and purples leads to a marker box full of dried up cool colors and warm colored markers in brand-spanking-new condition. Might as well use them! Besides, I can’t be selfish. Plenty of OTHER people like these colors. If that person is you, I’ll have it available for sale in my Redbubble shop very soon.

so many minis… {another little picture finished}

I have a ridiculous love of the color blue. RI-DIC-U-LOUS. So for this picture I decided to stop experimenting with garish color schemes and actually do something I liked. I started this picture quite a while ago, right around the time I finished this drawing. Somehow when the house got straightened up for company one night,  it got stuck away somewhere and I kind of forgot about it. Out of sight, out of mind, as usual.

Anyway, I rediscovered it yesterday and believe it or not, actually found some time to finish it. See, right after I say that I can never squeeze enough time out of the day to get things done, I actually do, and sound like I spoiled brat. Such is life.

I’m starting to get a nice collection of little 9″ x 9″ drawings. They’re small, and cute, and I think there could be dozens of ways to combine them on a gallery wall. Like on the big empty space directly above my computer, or the huge empty wall in our dining room. Since they’re so small, I think I could mix up all sorts of colors and patterns and still get a nice cohesive look, especially if I give them all white mats and black frames.

* disclaimer: it will probably be months before I actually get this done. But it’s still a cool idea.

day 3: completion

Well, I kind of screwed this one up. Not the drawing, but the fact that I meant to take several pictures as I worked to document the process. Instead I got sucked into that zone where you work and work, and the next thing you know the sun is going down.  Even though I could only put in 15-20 minutes at a time (the maximum length of most naps in my house) I managed to get the entire thing finished. Yay!

When I got to the coloring stage, I dragged out the gigantic box of Prismacolors and stared at them for awhile. I love the kid in a candy store feeling that comes along with choosing colors. I wanted to do something different, so I opted for intentionally ugly. I chose teal, chartreuse, olive green, magenta, apple green, tan, and lemon yellow. Sounds atrocious right? The end result was nowhere near as jarring as I expected. Actually, I think it’s rather pretty. (In an ugly sort of way.)
